OVER
THIS PAST
YEAR WE HAVE CONTINUED
TO BUILD
ON OUR STRONG
REPUTATION
IN THE ENGINEERING
SERVICES
DISCIPLINES
ACROSS A
BROAD RANGE
OF MARKET
SECTORS AND
HAVE EXPANDED
OUR SERVICE
OFFERINGS
THROUGH A NUMBER
OF
STRATEGIC
OPPORTUNITIES.
THIS HAS
BEEN ACHIEVED
THROUGH OUR INTERNATIONAL
NETWORK OF
OFFICES AND A DYNAMIC
MANAGEMENT TEAM WHO
ARE IN TOUCH
WITH LOCAL
AND INTERNATIONAL
MARKETS AND
NEW AND EMERGING
TRENDS.
The year 2003 will be remembered as a successful one
for NDY, having completed a range of exciting and interesting projects
whilst achieving a strong financial result.
All offices have a solid outlook for the year ahead,
with Brisbane, Melbourne, Canberra and Perth working on major projects
well into 2004, and Sydney breaking new ground in the industrial and infrastructure
sectors. Significant growth in 2003 for Auckland and Wellington is set
to continue, and Kuala Lumpur is doing well in the residential, education
and leisure markets.
I
am
excited
that
London
has
secured
significant
new
work in the health care and laboratory sectors, whilst
building
a solid
profile on specialist retail, residential, museum, galleries
and
heritage
projects. I’m confident London will deliver a strong contribution to the
group in the year ahead, fulfilling a key goal of our
strategic plan for growth in the region.
This year saw the group take significant steps forward
with many new information technology (IT) initiatives,
the most significant being our wholesale move to a new 3D CAD platform.
We have branded this
technology ‘NDY 3D Design – Engineering with Spatial Reality’. The system,
together with our proprietary applications, permits our
design engineers to produce multi-disciplinary documentation working within
a central 3D
project model. The strategic advantages include automated
clash detection to assist with design co-ordination and the ability to
capture project
intellectual property for use with online cost, inventory,
procurement and maintenance applications.
Our drive forward will focus on working closely with
other design professionals, clients, developers and building
owners on collaborative 3D techniques to further enhance the benefits of
the technology
and to strengthen NDY’s position at the forefront of engineering design.
Other IT initiatives over the year have included a new
global intranet, offering NDY personnel 24/7 desktop access to an extensive
library of proprietary information ranging from NDY design guides, standards
and technical memoranda to company manuals on process, procedures and policies.
The intranet also includes a new referee system, allowing NDY people to
define their expertise so that other NDY users can contact them to ask
questions on line, discuss ideas and share experiences.
I see these IT enhancements as having great potential
to provide the international group with significant benefits by helping
our engineers share ideas, exchange opinions and learn from the experiences
of others.
As in past years, we have made a concerted effort in
Research and Development (R&D) to maintain our international proprietary
specifications compliant with new industry developments, codes and regulations
in all core engineering disciplines. We remain heavily committed to R&D
activities, as technical excellence and the quality of our engineering
documentation is a major part of NDY’s strong reputation. I believe our
initiatives will further accelerate our R&D progress by harnessing the
power of our international Directorate, management teams and R&D committees.
While we have focused on the implementation of new technology
in the year, we have not lost sight of the importance of fostering learning
and change within the organisation, particularly with regard to client
service levels, the quality of our deliverables, communications, reward
structures for our people, and their roles and responsibilities. It has
been through active and visible sponsorship from senior management that
we have managed these areas well and in 2004 we plan to continue this commitment
as we believe it is essential if we are to face these ongoing challenges
effectively.
Over the coming year, we have committed to work diligently
to further enhance the service level provided to our clients and will be
exploring opportunities that have the potential to expand our business
and increase the strength of the firm.
Our strategies will be focused on three primary goals.
Firstly, the opportunities related to core services in existing markets
and regions of practice. Secondly, the logical expansion into adjacent
markets where we can leverage existing services, relationships and business
infrastructure. Thirdly, to evaluate specific geographic regions that offer
potential for new growth. Each opportunity will be examined on the basis
of its potential to contribute to the strength of the group and the fulfilment
of our vision to be acknowledged as the best practitioner in our field.
In 2004 we will focus also on:
- working
closely
with our
clients to
better understand
their business needs and to provide
a
high quality
engineering
service that
will exceed their expectations;
- continuing
to
differentiate
ourselves
through technical
excellence;
- recruiting
high
calibre employees
who
will challenge
us and who possess the ability
to
contribute
to
the long-term success of
the business;
- implementing
Continual
Professional
Development
programmes
for our people so that they may
achieve professional
and
personal
growth and enjoy
a
long-term,
fulfiling career with NDY;
- improving
our
staff appraisal
programme,
with a focus
on performance, self assessment and actions
relative
to goals;
- further
enhancing
our corporate
communications,
publicity
in the broader market and client reporting;
and
- continuing
our
high level
of
investment in IT and automation to
ensure the business
maintains
an
acceptable
technological and competitive
advantage.
We look forward to the future
with confidence and anticipation,
continuously striving to surpass
our own standards in engineering design
excellence
and client expectations.
