Norman Disney & Young has been presented with a major award for its achievement of a 5 Star Green Star design rating for 115 Batman Street, Melbourne. The Green Building Council of Australia presented the award on 20 March 2009 at Federation Square in Melbourne.
The award was accepted by the Chief Executive of Norman Disney & Young (NDY) Ian Hopkins who described the win as a significant achievement for the group. "We have been driven by our desire to contribute to sustainability and energy conservation," Mr. Hopkins said. "We see it as important for us to not be simply providing advice in this context but to demonstrate a true commitment to the sustainability philosophy."
115 Batman Street, which acts as NDY's Melbourne and head offices, is also pursuing 5 Star Green Star as-built and fit-out ratings. "While this award is for design, we have followed the design initiatives through the construction and fit-out phase," Mr. Hopkins said. "We are in the process of finalising our submission for 5 Star Green Star as-built and interiors fit-out ratings. If we achieve these, we will be one of only two buildings in Australia to do so."
Some of the key features of 115 Batman Street include passive chilled beam air conditioning, which significantly reduces energy consumption. High efficiency lighting, large amounts of natural light and glazing on all four façades also assist in this regard. The building features a solar hot water heater, rainwater collection tanks for toilet flushing, recycled concrete and steel, minimum use of PVC, exposed ceilings and facilities for cyclists.
Green Star is an initiative of the Green Building Council of Australia. It is a voluntary environmental rating scheme that evaluates the environmental credentials of buildings.
