Norman Disney & Young was employed as the mechanical services consultant by the Garvan Institute for their premises adjacent to St. Vincent’s Hospital in Darlinghurst, Sydney.

Work included the adaptive re-use of the former nurses quarters (modified into research laboratories) and a new office wing. The new and old wings are joined by an atrium and a spectacular spiral staircase.

The purpose of the project was to provide research facilities for medical teams. Laboratories are often used for a limited period and for a specific research team.

Challenges met by Norman Disney & Young included:

  • Designing systems into the very tight ceiling spaces in the former nurses quarters
  • Providing flexibility in services to allow them to be adapted to the specific needs of research teams
  • Designing a rat breeding facility which has very specific environmental requirements, as well as a need to provide differential pressurisation to reduce the risk of contamination
  • Meeting very tight budgets.
