Norman Disney & Young has been engaged by Moylan Homes to act as building services engineers, sustainability consultants and BREEAM assessors for this residential-led mixed-use development in Manchester.
The development consists of 61 apartments above 700m² of commercial space. The target for the development is 'zero carbon'; the residential element is aiming for a level 6 Code for Sustainable Homes rating and the commercial component for a BREEAM rating of Excellent.
In order to deliver such a highly sustainable building, NDY have pushed the boundaries of innovative design and proposed a combination of renewable energy solutions. The final proposal included biofuel CHP units combined and biomass boilers for primary heating and electricity generation. Wind and solar energy systems have also been incorporate to help achieve the 'zero carbon goal.
The client has been very keen to drive down energy requirements to minimum levels. NDY has worked closely with the architect to ensure the façade is as efficiently as possible. It also allows for a high level of natural lighting. Water use within the building will be minimised by the use of grey water recycling systems, and reduced flow water fittings. NDY has also undertaken numerous CfSH and BREEAM assessments in order to provide an appropriate framework for the project’s development.
