At the time of project delivery, Toyota Australia was a leading manufacturer, distributor and exporter of vehicles and one of Australia’s leading automotive companies.

Whilst it has since closed its manufacturing facilities in Australia, the Toyota plant in Altona manufactured the Camry, Hybrid Camry and Aurion vehicles for the Australian market and exported overseas to more than 13 markets in the Middle East, New Zealand and the Pacific Islands.

Toyota Motor Corporation commissioned NDY as the fire protection services engineer for both the upgrade of their engine and casting shop facility and the rationalisation of their existing fire service water supply infrastructure.

The engine and casting shop facility upgrade involved the construction of a new furnace house and modification to the floor plan throughout the 20,000 m² facility to accommodate new equipment for the manufacture of Toyota’s 4-cylinder engine.

A multi-point aspirated smoke detection system was provided throughout the existing facility and new furnace house for early warning, which was networked to the existing site graphics and control software.

Other services included undertaking a condition assessment of the existing engine test bay gaseous suppression system and modifications to the existing automatic fire sprinkler system, fire hydrant and hose reel system and fire detection and alarm system network.

The key objective of the water supply infrastructure rationalisation was to provide an integrated and reliable fire service where water is sourced from a site ring main designed to supply the concurrent water supply requirements of both the fire sprinklers and hydrants/hose reels. The rationalisation of the fire service water supply and consolidation of water storage tanks, booster pumps and fire brigade booster facilities facilitated all proposed building and external infrastructure works.
