Creative solutions lead to ‘out of the box’ designs
Each year, Consult Australia hosts a 5-5-5 evening with a format of five speakers – five projects – five minutes.
The theme for this year’s 5-5-5 is a focus on ‘Out-of-the-Box Design’. Presenters will be discussing and showing their creative solutions to the most difficult of problems. There will be a prize for the most popular presentation, as voted by the audience on the night in, what Consult Australia refers to as, “a bezerk and untested voting format.”
One of the five presenters is NDY senior acoustics engineer, Tom Krikke, who will use his five minutes to showcase the impact of helipads and helicopter noise on the health and wellbeing of children in childcare centres within a hospital setting.
“NDY was involved in a childcare centre design located 25 metres below a helipad of a major children’s hospital” says Tom. “There are no guidelines and regulations available on noise targets for once-in-a-week events and the impact on an infant’s health. To obtain usable source data for facade design, NDY undertook measurements on military grade helicopters to achieve an out-of-the-box design.”
